An October 2014 report from the Vision Council discussed usage of digital devices (computers, cell phones, iPads, etc.) This report noted the following:
- 90% of adults spend more than 2 hours/day on devices
- 60% of adults spend more than 5 hours/day on devices
- 30% of adults spend more than 9 hours/day on devices
Of this group, more than 60% reported symptoms of digital eyestrain including redness, burning, itchiness, blurred vision, fatigue and headaches. Blue light from digital devices is a major contributor to these symptoms due to chromatic aberration. Chromatic aberration is a type of distortion in which there is a failure of a lens to focus all colors to the same convergence point. Along with digital eyestrain, blue light presents potential health disorders including sleep disturbance and cumulative retinal damage. Taking the proper steps to avoid digital eyestrain may help ease the above-listed symptoms, and reduce the risk of long-term health problems.
